Canon: a camera-camcorder 4K

After HD, what will he? The answer is already known: the 4K format already used in film. Canon has, at the Canon Expo, the first aircraft of this type, even if the rest of the way forward to integrate this technology into a camcorder.


The device resembles the natural son of an SLR and a hairdryer. In fact, technically, it is akin to a bridge high-end receives a small sensor size (2 / 3) 8MP, the same definition and the same size as on the Minolta A2 for example, and zoom 20x.

This is a piece a little cumbersome, but an unusual brightness in relation to its range: from 7 to 140 mm, it reaches f/1.8 at wide angle and yet to f/3.8 in telephoto . It is also the first time the red claw L, which traditionally marks the objectives for professional range of SLR, is used on a small sensor device since ... 2004, and Pro1 (thank you to the reader who reminded us of this reference). It is the sign of a neat goal, with two rings of control: housing side, a zoom ring (the latter is driven, ensuring smooth transitions), side sunshade, a ring focus (also motorized and highly multiplied, providing highly accurate adjustment).
4K = 8x the normal rate!
The 8MP sensor lets you capture videos 4K, including the precise format is not known (probably the "Quad HD" 3840 x 2160, 16 / 9: this was in any case the definition of monitor on which the flow was returned), at 60 frames per second.

This is not really what side of the sensor performance: we have already seen gusts up this rate on certain CDs. But the recording device then immobilized several seconds, while on the prototype treatment is continued.

So the electronics downstream of the sensor that impresses: it digests almost 500 MP every second. It is three times that manages the EOS 1D Mk IV in a gust to 10 fps, and eight times the throughput of the best compact current video (HD at 30 fps)!


Here, however, the stream is sent directly to an external box, located under the machine. There is also no trigger: the video is sent directly to the housing registration, and whoever wants to extract a photo directly from the film.

Taken in hand, the prototype is fairly well built, very large, of course, take into hands some ways reminiscent of formats. The top LCD panel is extremely thin, like the rest of the latest EOS SLR range, but unlike the Sony R1 does not swivel sideways: damage. The electronic viewfinder, for its part, is exemplary, with impressive size and impeccable precision, because they had not had to look hard to tell if it beats those SLR experts, but the competition is real.

This unit does not of course see the day in the state. It will begin to integrate its supply and its recording medium - probably a hard drive: We do not know of any memory card capable of providing sufficient flow. He also deserves some ergonomic adjustments: a hybrid device also deliberately photo-video, taken in hand less "reflective", why not with an adjustable handle, will be essential.

But no doubt that this super-bridge foreshadows what will be the technically high-end camcorders in the coming years.

Nikon gives depth to the photo

The Japanese launched an online service for converting 2D images into 3D. The images are then visible without glasses raised on a dedicated digital connection.

3D imaging, today in film and television, extends to the photo. While Fujifilm has introduced the second generation of devices capable of taking pictures in 3D thanks to its two image sensors integrated Nikon explores a different dimension to giving our images without having to invest in new hardware . The prestigious Japanese brand offers an online service for converting 2D images into 3D, combined with a digital photo frame capable of displaying 3D images without glasses. The service, currently available only in Japan, is available for a monthly fee or annual fee. The digital photo frame is available to subscribers for free.

The conversion service is called Picturetown 3D images. It is proposed as part of the service Picturetown Nikon managing photos online. It applies to photos taken with any digital camera.

Digital Photo Frame 300i NF-3D is built on the basis of the Android software platform from Google. It uses a lenticular screen LCD of 7.2 inches with 3D vision without glasses. Nikon does not specify the supplier, but in Japan three manufacturers are making LCDs 3D like: Sharp, Toshiba and Hitachi. The 3D display is made in the same resolution in 2D at 800 x 600 pixels. The photo frame is equipped with wireless Wi-Fi for uploading images on the Internet and exchange pictures with other photo frames identical. It can also view 3D video clips taken in 2D and 3D converted via the service from Nikon. It also features a clock, calendar and weather station.
